وَمَآ
And what
أَصَٰبَكُمْ
struck you
يَوْمَ
(on the) day
ٱلْتَقَى
(when) met
ٱلْجَمْعَانِ
the two hosts
فَبِإِذْنِ
(was) by (the) permission
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
وَلِيَعْلَمَ
and that He (might) make evident
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
the believers.
وَلِيَعْلَمَ And that He (might) make evident ٱلَّذِينَ those who نَافَقُوا۟ (are) hypocrites. وَقِيلَ And it was said لَهُمْ to them, تَعَالَوْا۟ "Come, قَٰتِلُوا۟ fight فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah
أَوِ or ٱدْفَعُوا۟ defend." قَالُوا۟ They said, لَوْ "If نَعْلَمُ we knew قِتَالًا fighting لَّٱتَّبَعْنَٰكُمْ certainly we (would have) followed you." هُمْ They - لِلْكُفْرِ to disbelief يَوْمَئِذٍ that day
أَقْرَبُ (were) nearer مِنْهُمْ than [them] لِلْإِيمَٰنِ to the faith, يَقُولُونَ saying بِأَفْوَٰهِهِم with their mouths مَّا what لَيْسَ was not فِى in قُلُوبِهِمْ their hearts.
وَٱللَّهُ And Allah أَعْلَمُ (is) Most Knowing بِمَا of what يَكْتُمُونَ they conceal. ٱلَّذِينَ Those who قَالُوا۟ said لِإِخْوَٰنِهِمْ about their brothers وَقَعَدُوا۟ while they sat,
لَوْ "If أَطَاعُونَا they (had) obeyed us مَا not قُتِلُوا۟ they would have been killed." قُلْ Say, فَٱدْرَءُوا۟ "Then avert عَنْ from أَنفُسِكُمُ yourselves ٱلْمَوْتَ [the] death إِن if
كُنتُمْ you are صَٰدِقِينَ truthful. وَلَا And (do) not تَحْسَبَنَّ think ٱلَّذِينَ (of) those who قُتِلُوا۟ are killed فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah
أَمْوَٰتًۢا (as) dead. بَلْ Nay! أَحْيَآءٌ They are alive, عِندَ near رَبِّهِمْ their Lord; يُرْزَقُونَ they are given provision. فَرِحِينَ Rejoicing بِمَآ in what ءَاتَىٰهُمُ bestowed them
ٱللَّهُ Allah مِن of فَضْلِهِۦ His Bounty, وَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ and they receive good tidings بِٱلَّذِينَ about those who لَمْ (have) not يَلْحَقُوا۟ yet joined بِهِم [with] them
مِّنْ [from] خَلْفِهِمْ (but are) left behind - أَلَّا that (there will be) no خَوْفٌ fear عَلَيْهِمْ on them وَلَا and not هُمْ they يَحْزَنُونَ will grieve. يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ They receive good tidings
بِنِعْمَةٍ of Favor مِّنَ from ٱللَّهِ Allah وَفَضْلٍ and Bounty وَأَنَّ and that ٱللَّهَ Allah لَا (does) not يُضِيعُ let go waste أَجْرَ (the) reward
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ (of) the believers. ٱلَّذِينَ Those who ٱسْتَجَابُوا۟ responded لِلَّهِ to Allah وَٱلرَّسُولِ and the Messenger مِنۢ from بَعْدِ after مَآ what أَصَابَهُمُ befell them -
ٱلْقَرْحُ the injury - لِلَّذِينَ for those who أَحْسَنُوا۟ did good مِنْهُمْ among them وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ and feared Allah, أَجْرٌ (is) a reward - عَظِيمٌ great.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who قَالَ said لَهُمُ to them ٱلنَّاسُ [the people], إِنَّ "Indeed ٱلنَّاسَ the people قَدْ (have) certainly جَمَعُوا۟ gathered لَكُمْ against you, فَٱخْشَوْهُمْ so fear them."
فَزَادَهُمْ But it increased them إِيمَٰنًا (in) faith وَقَالُوا۟ and they said, حَسْبُنَا "Sufficient for us ٱللَّهُ (is) Allah وَنِعْمَ and (He is the) best ٱلْوَكِيلُ [the] Disposer of affairs."
وَلِيَعْلَمَ And that He (might) make evident ٱلَّذِينَ those who نَافَقُوا۟ (are) hypocrites. وَقِيلَ And it was said لَهُمْ to them, تَعَالَوْا۟ "Come, قَٰتِلُوا۟ fight فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah
أَوِ or ٱدْفَعُوا۟ defend." قَالُوا۟ They said, لَوْ "If نَعْلَمُ we knew قِتَالًا fighting لَّٱتَّبَعْنَٰكُمْ certainly we (would have) followed you." هُمْ They - لِلْكُفْرِ to disbelief يَوْمَئِذٍ that day
أَقْرَبُ (were) nearer مِنْهُمْ than [them] لِلْإِيمَٰنِ to the faith, يَقُولُونَ saying بِأَفْوَٰهِهِم with their mouths مَّا what لَيْسَ was not فِى in قُلُوبِهِمْ their hearts.

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ (of) the believers. ٱلَّذِينَ Those who ٱسْتَجَابُوا۟ responded لِلَّهِ to Allah وَٱلرَّسُولِ and the Messenger مِنۢ from بَعْدِ after مَآ what أَصَابَهُمُ befell them -
