وَلَقَدْ
And verily,
ءَاتَيْنَا
We gave
لُقْمَٰنَ
Luqman
ٱلْحِكْمَةَ
the wisdom
أَنِ
that,
ٱشْكُرْ
"Be grateful
لِلَّهِ
to Allah."
وَمَن
And whoever
يَشْكُرْ
(is) grateful
فَإِنَّمَا
then only
يَشْكُرُ he is grateful لِنَفْسِهِۦ for himself. وَمَن And whoever كَفَرَ (is) ungrateful, فَإِنَّ then indeed, ٱللَّهَ Allah غَنِىٌّ (is) Free of need, حَمِيدٌ Praiseworthy. وَإِذْ And when قَالَ said
لُقْمَٰنُ Luqman لِٱبْنِهِۦ to his son وَهُوَ while he يَعِظُهُۥ (was) instructing him, يَٰبُنَىَّ "O my son! لَا (Do) not تُشْرِكْ associate partners بِٱللَّهِ with Allah. إِنَّ Indeed, ٱلشِّرْكَ associating partners
لَظُلْمٌ (is) surely an injustice عَظِيمٌ great." وَوَصَّيْنَا And We have enjoined ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ (upon) man بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ for his parents - حَمَلَتْهُ carried him أُمُّهُۥ his mother
وَهْنًا (in) weakness عَلَىٰ upon وَهْنٍ weakness, وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ and his weaning فِى (is) in عَامَيْنِ two years أَنِ that ٱشْكُرْ "Be grateful لِى to Me وَلِوَٰلِدَيْكَ and to your parents;
إِلَىَّ towards Me ٱلْمَصِيرُ (is) the destination. وَإِن But if جَٰهَدَاكَ they strive against you عَلَىٰٓ on أَن that تُشْرِكَ you associate partners بِى with Me مَا what لَيْسَ not
لَكَ you have بِهِۦ of it عِلْمٌ any knowledge, فَلَا then (do) not تُطِعْهُمَا obey both of them. وَصَاحِبْهُمَا But accompany them فِى in ٱلدُّنْيَا the world مَعْرُوفًا (with) kindness,
وَٱتَّبِعْ and follow سَبِيلَ (the) path مَنْ (of him) who أَنَابَ turns إِلَىَّ to Me. ثُمَّ Then إِلَىَّ towards Me مَرْجِعُكُمْ (is) your return, فَأُنَبِّئُكُم then I will inform you
بِمَا of what كُنتُمْ you used (to) تَعْمَلُونَ do." يَٰبُنَىَّ "O my son! إِنَّهَآ Indeed it, إِن if تَكُ it be مِثْقَالَ (the) weight حَبَّةٍ (of) a grain مِّنْ of
خَرْدَلٍ a mustard seed, فَتَكُن and it be فِى in صَخْرَةٍ a rock أَوْ or فِى in ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ the heavens أَوْ or فِى in ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth يَأْتِ Allah will bring it forth. *[meaning includes next or prev. word]
بِهَا Allah will bring it forth. *[meaning includes next or prev. word] ٱللَّهُ Allah will bring it forth. *[meaning includes next or prev. word] إِنَّ Indeed, ٱللَّهَ Allah لَطِيفٌ (is) All-Subtle, خَبِيرٌ All-Aware. يَٰبُنَىَّ O my son! أَقِمِ Establish ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ the prayer وَأْمُرْ and enjoin
بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ [with] the right وَٱنْهَ and forbid عَنِ from ٱلْمُنكَرِ the wrong, وَٱصْبِرْ and be patient عَلَىٰ over مَآ what أَصَابَكَ befalls you. إِنَّ Indeed, ذَٰلِكَ that
مِنْ (is) of عَزْمِ the matters requiring determination. *[meaning includes next or prev. word] ٱلْأُمُورِ the matters requiring determination. *[meaning includes next or prev. word] وَلَا And (do) not تُصَعِّرْ turn خَدَّكَ your cheek لِلنَّاسِ from men وَلَا and (do) not تَمْشِ walk فِى in ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth
مَرَحًا exultantly. إِنَّ Indeed, ٱللَّهَ Allah لَا (does) not يُحِبُّ like كُلَّ every مُخْتَالٍ self-conceited فَخُورٍ boaster. وَٱقْصِدْ And be moderate فِى in مَشْيِكَ your pace
وَٱغْضُضْ and lower مِن [of] صَوْتِكَ your voice. إِنَّ Indeed, أَنكَرَ (the) harshest ٱلْأَصْوَٰتِ (of all) sounds لَصَوْتُ (is) surely (the) voice ٱلْحَمِيرِ (of) the donkeys."
