وَعَلَى
And on
ٱلثَّلَٰثَةِ
the three
ٱلَّذِينَ
(of) those who
خُلِّفُوا۟
were left behind,
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
إِذَا
when
ضَاقَتْ
(was) straitened
عَلَيْهِمُ
for them
ٱلْأَرْضُ
the earth,
بِمَا though رَحُبَتْ it was vast. وَضَاقَتْ And (was) straitened عَلَيْهِمْ for them أَنفُسُهُمْ their own souls وَظَنُّوٓا۟ and they were certain أَن that لَّا (there is) no مَلْجَأَ refuge
مِنَ from ٱللَّهِ Allah إِلَّآ except إِلَيْهِ to Him. ثُمَّ Then تَابَ He turned (in mercy) عَلَيْهِمْ to them لِيَتُوبُوٓا۟ that they may repent. إِنَّ Indeed, ٱللَّهَ Allah, هُوَ He ٱلتَّوَّابُ (is) the Acceptor of repentance,
ٱلرَّحِيمُ the Most Merciful. يَٰٓأَيُّهَا O you ٱلَّذِينَ who ءَامَنُوا۟ believe! ٱتَّقُوا۟ Fear ٱللَّهَ Allah وَكُونُوا۟ and be مَعَ with
ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ those who are truthful. مَا Not كَانَ it was لِأَهْلِ (for) the people ٱلْمَدِينَةِ of the Madinah وَمَنْ and who حَوْلَهُم were around them
مِّنَ of ٱلْأَعْرَابِ the bedouins, أَن that يَتَخَلَّفُوا۟ they remain behind عَن after رَّسُولِ the Messenger ٱللَّهِ of Allah, وَلَا and not يَرْغَبُوا۟ they prefer
بِأَنفُسِهِمْ their lives عَن to نَّفْسِهِۦ his life. ذَٰلِكَ That is بِأَنَّهُمْ because [they] لَا (does) not يُصِيبُهُمْ afflict them ظَمَأٌ thirst
وَلَا and not نَصَبٌ fatigue وَلَا and not مَخْمَصَةٌ hunger فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah, وَلَا and not يَطَـُٔونَ they step مَوْطِئًا any step
يَغِيظُ that angers ٱلْكُفَّارَ the disbelievers وَلَا and not يَنَالُونَ they inflict مِنْ on عَدُوٍّ an enemy نَّيْلًا an infliction إِلَّا except كُتِبَ is recorded
لَهُم for them بِهِۦ in it عَمَلٌ (as) a deed صَٰلِحٌ righteous. إِنَّ Indeed, ٱللَّهَ Allah لَا (does) not يُضِيعُ allow to be lost أَجْرَ the reward ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ (of) the good-doers.
وَلَا And not يُنفِقُونَ they spend نَفَقَةً any spending صَغِيرَةً small وَلَا and not كَبِيرَةً big, وَلَا and not يَقْطَعُونَ they cross
وَادِيًا a valley إِلَّا but كُتِبَ is recorded لَهُمْ for them, لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ that (He) may reward them ٱللَّهُ Allah أَحْسَنَ the best مَا (of) what كَانُوا۟ they used (to)
يَعْمَلُونَ do. وَمَا And not كَانَ is ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ (for) the believers لِيَنفِرُوا۟ that they go forth كَآفَّةً all together.
فَلَوْلَا So if not نَفَرَ go forth مِن from كُلِّ every فِرْقَةٍ group مِّنْهُمْ among them طَآئِفَةٌ a party لِّيَتَفَقَّهُوا۟ that they may obtain understanding فِى in ٱلدِّينِ the religion,
وَلِيُنذِرُوا۟ and that they may warn قَوْمَهُمْ their people إِذَا when رَجَعُوٓا۟ they return إِلَيْهِمْ to them, لَعَلَّهُمْ so that they may يَحْذَرُونَ beware.
